Description:

A common approach to engaging a community and “meeting a need” is to focus on what needs fixing — what is obviously broken. Outcomes of this approach, however, often lead to unhealthy power dynamics, paternalism, and overall fatigue.

  • What if you instead started with what God was already doing in the community?
  • What if you developed a new way to view neighborhoods by starting with what they already have — the gifts of people, organizations, institutions, and ministries?

Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) provides a framework and lens that can lead to a new mindset and approach to engaging your community. ABCD can position you to better connect with neighbors by learning who they are and how God has gifted them as you join them for the flourishing of the community. This workshop explores ABCD and its implications for engaging communities.
